JBA Bentley has enjoyed a successful night at the British Construction Industry Awards as its project at Great Yarmouth picked up the Environmental and Sustainability Initiative of the Year award.
Hosted at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, the JBA Bentley team involved in the delivery of tidal defence works at Great Yarmouth received the prestigious prize, described by the panel of expert judges as the "clear winner."
One of JBA Bentley’s largest projects for the Environment Agency – the project involves major works to renovate and replace flood defences that provide protection to 4,500 homes and businesses.
Commenting on the project’s award win, the judges highlighted the "transferable and repeatable lessons" that emerged from the project’s collaborative use of a local supply chain, "especially around the design-to-construction transition, which produced quantifiable and demonstrable benefits in efficiency and carbon reduction."
Careful planning, innovative design, material reuse and sourcing local suppliers has contributed to a >40% reduction in carbon on the project. The judges also commended the well-researched design of the project, with a focus on differential rates of corrosion, which "informed the approach to sustainability."
Ian Bester, Operations Director, said, "For us, the BCIAs are the pinnacle of the awards calendar, so it is a great achievement and in a category that is so topical at the minute.
"I have nothing but admiration for how this team has so far delivered this £30m project - thank you, well done and congratulations."

Carbon Net Zero Initiative of the Year – Great Yarmouth Tidal Defences
Upgrade and Renewal Project of the Year – Bentley Ings Pumping Station
Climate Resilience Project of the Year – Bentley Ings Pumping Station
The British Construction Industry Awards also saw Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) receive a highly commended award in the Utility Project of the Year category for the tunnel replacement work at Hallbank, and colleagues working in the Anglian Water Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) win the Digital Initiative of the Year Award.
