JBA Bentley enjoyed a night of success at the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Awards in Yorkshire and Humber, winning the esteemed Linda Grant Health and Safety Award for the very first time.
JBA Bentley - an integrated design and build contractor comprising the environmental engineering expertise of JBA Consulting and contracting experience of JN Bentley - was presented with the Linda Grant Health and Safety Award for their flood alleviation work undertaken between Winteringham Ings and South Ferriby, on Humberside.
The project was delivered with the Environment Agency and involved the construction and maintenance of defences protecting 110 residential properties and a large cement factory from the risk of flooding. This included engineering 2.7km of flood embankments, 200m of sheet piled walls, 150m of reinforced concrete flood walls plus the installation of a large 13m wide flood gate, plus demountable flood defences across the sluice and the strengthening of existing defences.
The team embodied the positive safety culture of the organisation – putting into practice the principles of their behavioural based safety ‘I Care’ training. Demonstrating proactive communication and collaboration, the positive safety culture saw potential hazards identified and colleagues confident to challenge one another when conditions appeared less safe. Everyone was involved – from site to design to procurement – resulting in a positive intervention reporting rate twice that of the current company average.
The result: despite undertaking some higher-risk activities - including working in water and on a busy public highway – and working to a tight programme, only one minor first aid injury was recorded in over 89,000 hours worked.
The project also received two certificates of excellence from the Considerate Constructors Scheme, scoring the site 8 out of 9 for safety – further validation of the first-class culture developed by the team.
Despite previous success from JN Bentley and MMB, this is the first time JBA Bentley has won the Linda Grant Award in its own right – a great achievement that recognises the company’s dedication to caring about keeping each other safe.
Ian Bester, Operations Director, said, "It’s brilliant to obtain industry recognition on this level for a project that exemplified JBA Bentley’s safety culture.
"Despite challenging conditions and some higher-risk activities on site, the team have maintained the highest standards of safety throughout. Their efforts are a credit to the organisation."
